5 Luxury Brands Whose Bags Hold Their Value Best in Malaysia

Not all luxury bags are created equal when it comes to resale. These five brands consistently deliver the strongest returns on the Malaysian pre-loved market.

If you are buying a luxury bag and you care about what it will be worth in five years, brand choice matters enormously. Some brands hold their value almost perfectly. Others depreciate the moment you walk out of the store. Here are the five brands that consistently perform best on the Malaysian pre-loved market.

1. Hermès

There is no debate here. Hermès is the gold standard of luxury resale. The Birkin and Kelly are the only bags in the world that reliably sell above retail price. In Malaysia, a Birkin 30 in Togo leather with gold hardware retails at approximately RM55,000. On the resale market, the same bag in excellent condition sells for RM70,000 to RM100,000. Exotic skin versions — crocodile, ostrich — can sell for three to five times retail.

The reason is simple: Hermès controls supply more tightly than any other luxury brand. You cannot simply walk in and buy a Birkin. This scarcity keeps demand — and prices — permanently elevated.

2. Chanel

Chanel has raised its prices more aggressively than any other luxury brand over the past five years. The Classic Flap in medium size has gone from approximately RM18,000 in 2019 to over RM30,000 today. This means bags bought even a few years ago have appreciated significantly. The Classic Flap and the 2.55 Reissue are the two safest Chanel investments.

3. Louis Vuitton

LV does not appreciate the way Hermès or Chanel does, but it holds value exceptionally well and is by far the easiest luxury brand to resell quickly. The Neverfull, Speedy, and Pochette Métis are always in demand. The monogram canvas is virtually indestructible, which means even older pieces in good condition command strong prices. If you want liquidity — the ability to sell quickly when you need to — LV is the answer.

4. Rolex

Rolex is not a bag, but it belongs on this list. The Submariner, Datejust, and GMT-Master II consistently sell above retail on the secondary market. In Malaysia, the Submariner Date retails at approximately RM55,000 but sells pre-owned for RM70,000 to RM90,000. Like Hermès, Rolex controls supply tightly, and authorised dealers have long waiting lists for popular models.

5. Cartier

Cartier jewellery — particularly the Love Bracelet and Juste un Clou — holds its value better than almost any other jewellery brand. The Love Bracelet in yellow gold retails at approximately RM22,000 and sells pre-owned for RM18,000 to RM22,000 depending on condition. For jewellery, that is exceptional value retention.

The Bottom Line

Buying luxury with resale value in mind is not about being mercenary — it is about being smart. The brands above have proven track records. If you buy authenticated pieces in good condition from verified sources, you are not just buying a beautiful object. You are making a sound financial decision.
