Luxury Bags as Investments: Which Brands Actually Hold Their Value

Some luxury bags are worth more today than when they were bought new. Here is which brands and models have proven to be the best stores of value.

In a world where the stock market goes up and down and property prices are out of reach for many, a growing number of Malaysians are looking at luxury bags as a serious investment. And the numbers back it up.

The Hermès Birkin has outperformed the S&P 500 over the last 35 years. The Chanel Classic Flap has increased in retail price by over 70% since 2019 alone. These are not just fashion accessories — they are assets.

The Brands That Hold Value Best

Hermès

Hermès is in a category of its own. The Birkin and Kelly are the only luxury bags that consistently sell for more than their retail price on the secondary market. A Birkin 25 in Togo leather with gold hardware retails for approximately RM55,000. On the resale market, the same bag in excellent condition sells for RM70,000 to RM120,000 depending on colour. Exotic skins — crocodile, ostrich — can fetch three to five times retail.

Why? Because Hermès controls supply ruthlessly. You cannot walk into a store and buy a Birkin. You have to build a purchase history with the brand first. This artificial scarcity keeps resale prices high.

Chanel

Chanel has raised its prices aggressively over the past five years — more than any other luxury brand. The Classic Flap in medium size now retails for over RM30,000. Because retail prices keep rising, older bags bought at lower prices have appreciated significantly in resale value. The Classic Flap and the 2.55 Reissue are the safest bets for value retention.

Louis Vuitton

LV is the most accessible of the three. The Neverfull, Speedy, and Pochette Métis are consistently in demand on the resale market. They do not appreciate the way Hermès does, but they hold their value well and are easy to sell quickly. The monogram canvas is virtually indestructible, which helps.

What Affects Resale Value

Condition is everything. A bag in pristine condition with its original dust bag, box, and authenticity card will sell for significantly more than the same bag without accessories. Keep your receipts. Store your bags properly. And if you are buying with investment in mind, choose classic colours — black, beige, brown — over seasonal colours that go out of style.

The pre-loved luxury market in Malaysia is still young, which means there is real opportunity for early movers. The key is buying authenticated pieces from verified sources — which is exactly what LuxeVerified is built to help you do.
